The stall fee waiver for market vendors will continue for another financial year, says Local Government Minister Premila Kumar.

She said this after vendors in Namaka asked how long the Government initiative would continue for.

Mrs Kumar said she was surprised the vendors had not been informed that the stall waiver would continue for 12 months.

“While I was with the market vendors I realised that the right information does not go to them,” she said.

“If we can have all of this information recorded and played on a screen then the market vendors will be well informed.

“When I went there the women were thanking me for the stall fee waiver and they said that it was only for six months and I said that it was for the whole year.

“They did not know that. “They said that somebody told them and I understood that there was some confusion.”

She said they needed to ensure that information was made available to market vendors and the public “so that they know about the policies that we roll out”.

Namaka market vendor Mereani Baleiwai said the stall fee waiver was “a huge relief” for the vendors — especially in light of the rising cost of living.

“If we were paying stall fees right now I don’t think our business would still be alive,” she said.
