New powers given to Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) under proposed customs changes need stronger safeguards to protect individuals and businesses, Opposition MP Premila Kumar says.
Speaking during the debate on the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service Bill 2026, Ms Kumar said the Opposition supported stronger enforcement powers for customs officers but stressed that those powers must be balanced with accountability.
She raised concerns over new questioning powers, saying customs officers should have clear procedures to follow and that people being questioned should have protections such as access to legal advice and safeguards against self-incrimination.
“These safeguards protect innocent people from unfair treatment and ensure that investigations are carried out properly,” Ms Kumar said.
She also questioned the FRCS’ new powers which allowed it to order independent testing of imported goods.
