Independent Opposition MP and Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs deputy chairperson Premila Kumar reassured members of the public that the Employment Relations Act is still in its initial stages and being analysed thoroughly.
Speaking during the Employment Relations Amendment Act consultations in Nadi this week, Mrs Kumar said the committee would factually check the Bill to understand the rationale behind the changes.
“That’s why there is a standing committee, and that’s why the Bill has been referred to the standing committee,” she said.
“The executive arm of the government, they’ve done the job, which is the Ministry of Employment.
“Now, it is with the legislators, and it is our work to thoroughly scrutinise the Bill to ensure there is no economic impact of that Bill.”
Mrs Kumar said there was a specific criterion that every committee uses to analyse the Bill, and the same criteria would be used by this committee.
“I can assure the citizens of this country that that’s how we’re going to analyse the Bill, so that the workers and the employers, there is a win-win situation for both parties.”
