The Kiwa Initiative-Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for climate resilience received an additional boost as the initiative’s donors renewed their financial support, raising the current budget from €$41million to €$57million.
France has provided an additional contribution of €$8m, the European Union €$6m, New Zealand- $2million, and Australia – $2m.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) regional director in Oceania Mason Smith said the funding support by the donors of the Kiwa Initiative was timely because the region continued to deal with the challenges posed by climate change.
He said the IUCN Kiwa Initiative team based in Suva would ensure they achieved the goal of improving Pacific Islands ecosystems, economies and communities’ resilience to climate change through improved ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation using nature-based solutions through grants and technical assistance.
Fijian Ministry of Waterways, Community Centered Conservation and National Trust of Fiji are among the 10 projects awarded local grants by IUCN under the Kiwa initiative.
