The passage of the Fiji Police Bill 2026 will strengthen the Fiji Police Force’s ability to tackle emerging forms of crime while improving accountability and restoring public confidence in policing.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu welcomed the passage of the Bill, describing it as a significant step towards modernising Fiji’s law enforcement framework.
He said the legislation came at a crucial time as the Force continued implementing institutional reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism, integrity and community policing.
Commissioner Tudravu said the review of the Police Act 1965 was long overdue, as the existing legislation could no longer adequately address the demands of modern policing.
He acknowledged the Government’s support in responding to calls for the outdated legislation to be reviewed, particularly given the increasingly complex nature of crime in Fiji.
According to Commissioner Tudravu, the new legislation will provide police officers with a more comprehensive legal framework to respond effectively to emerging criminal activities.
At the same time, it will strengthen transparency and accountability measures to ensure policing services are delivered in accordance with modern legal and human rights standards.
He said the reforms were also intended to restore public trust and confidence in the Fiji Police Force.
Commissioner Tudravu thanked Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua, ministry officials and Members of Parliament for their contributions towards the passage of the Bill.
He also acknowledged members of the public who participated in the various stages of its development.
The Commissioner said public involvement had been instrumental in shaping a modern legal framework designed to improve police governance and strengthen relations between officers and the communities they serve.
The Fiji Police Force said the legislation would support ongoing efforts to modernise policing, uphold institutional integrity and ensure officers were better equipped to address Fiji’s evolving security challenges.
