Information gathered at the scene of a house fire at Kara Punja Road, Lautoka this week indicate it may have been caused by a kerosene stove, says National Fire Authority Chief Executive officer Puamau Sowane.

Mr Sowane said the four-bedroom house was owned by a 63-year-old retired military officer who resided with his wife, daughter and six grandchildren.

“Upon arrival at the scene at 0753 hours (7.53am) due to heavy traffic, the brigade noticed the four-bedroom, half concrete, half corrugated iron house was fully engulfed in flames,” he said.

Mr Sowane said the homeowner’s wife, daughter and four of his grandchildren were present during the fire but managed to escape uninjured.

“The estimated damage cost to the structure with its contents is yet to be determined by the owner.”

Mr Sowane said investigations would be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
