Karan smashes 5000m record

Pacific Games gold medallist Yeshnil Karan broke the national record for the 5000-metre event after coming in second place during the Australian Athletics Championships last week.

The former Tavua College student clocked 14 minutes 29 seconds in Adelaide to break his record of 14.31min which was set last year.

“I am very pleased with to have set a new national record after competing here at the Australian Athletics Championships,” he wrote on a Facebook post yesterday.

“I am happy with my relaxed form and strong finish in the final 600m, and the fast 200m finish.”

The 23-year-old won Team Fiji’s first gold medal at the Pacific Games in the Solomons last year for the 10,000m event.

“I am grateful to my training partners for your great support and encouragement. Thanks to the coaches as well for the great training sessions.”

Meanwhile, in first place was Max Shervington of Australia who clocked 14.24mins while Tom March finished third in 14.33mins.
