Former deputy prime minister Manoa Kamikamica has filed a no case to answer application after the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) closed its case in his trial today.
Senior lawyer Wylie Clarke, appearing for Mr Kamikamica, lodged the application after the prosecution called its second and final witness, former Cabinet minister Kalaveti Ravu.
Mr Clarke did not cross-examine Mr Ravu, while Senior Prosecutor Josann Pene elected not to re-examine him.
Mr Kamikamica is charged with one count of perjury for allegedly stating under oath before the Commission of Inquiry that he had no knowledge of the appointment of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali before her appointment on September 5, 2024.
In the alternative, he faces one count of providing false information to a public servant for allegedly giving the same false information to the Commission of Inquiry.
The matter has been adjourned until tomorrow, when the court will hear Mr Clarke’s no case to answer application.
Earlier today, Mr Ravu told the court that “most people” had asked him about his FICAC matter while Parliament was sitting on July 8, 2024.
However, when State prosecutor Josann Pene asked him to identify those people, Mr Ravu said he was referring to his parliamentary colleagues but declined to disclose their names.
The proceedings were briefly adjourned for about 10 minutes before Mr Ravu continued giving evidence.
