The island of Kadavu recorded 159 new COVID-19 cases within a 24-hour period and this has worried political party leaders.

National Federation Party leader Prof Biman Prasad said it could have been avoided if Fiji had imposed an early hard lockdown, exactly similar to what New Zealand had done and what was more concerning was that maritime islands did not have the medical resources to deal with the issue.

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said the rising number of COVID-19 cases in maritime islands showed Government’s failure to contain the spread of the virus.

Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube said he was concerned because maritime islands had very basic health facilities.

SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka said it was a result of Government’s failure to adhere to sound advice.

Questions sent to Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
