JOURNALISTS from eight mainstream media organisations took part in a fact-checking workshop organised by Internews in partnership with the Fijian Media Association (FMA) last week.
Participants had the privilege of learning from award-winning digital forensics reporter with ABC Investigations, Kevin Nguyen, who specialises in Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT).
The workshop aimed to give journalists in Fiji the skills, tools and strategies to be able to properly verify information, images or videos online before utilising them in their reports.
It is the first of a series of trainings Internews is rolling out in partnership with FMA.
The Fiji Times editor and FMA vice-president Fred Wesley said such workshops were important for media organisations to ensure factual information were disseminated to the public.
“Obviously, the training of journalists is an important part of the development of the media industry in Fiji,” Wesley said.
“We (FMA) appreciate the role of Internews to assist us in training our people to have the skills, the tools and the confidence to properly verify information, images or videos before they go online.
“We have also had discussions on other workshops that will empower our journalists moving forward, and we are looking forward to them.”
Internews and FMA will also be conducting training in investigative journalism, financial, audit and budget reporting later this year.
