Journalists play a central role in addressing environmental challenges, says Mai TV director and Fiji Media Association general secretary Stanley Simpson.

Speaking during World Press Freedom Day celebrations at the Fiji National University Nasinu Campus, Simpson said journalists shed light on critical issues such as rising sea levels.

He said through this, issues such as rising sea levels not only garnered international attention but also drove significant discussions and policymaking to address these crises effectively.

“But as we tell this story, with all our new technologies and fancy digital tools, it is important to remember that ethical journalism is paramount, especially in environmental reporting where the stakes are high,” said Simpson.

“Journalists must navigate pressures from various governments and corporations (including their own) while maintaining honesty and balance in their reports.

“This integrity is what builds public trust and fosters informed decision-making.”

He said there was also a growing need for journalists who were knowledgeable about environmental issues to work with new reporters.

“Aspiring reporters should be encouraged to undertake environmental journalism, which is grounded in a solid scientific understanding.

“Mentorship and continuous professional development are crucial in nurturing informed and skilled journalists.”

Also celebrating the day with staff members in Suva yesterday, Fiji Times Pte Ltd general manager Christine Lyons said as Fiji’s longest-serving media organisation, it was important to always take a moment to observe World Press Freedom Day.

“It’s a day to pause and reflect on our role. As we have done since 1869, we will continue to uphold everything true to a free and vibrant media by holding those in power to account,” said Ms Lyons.

“The theme this year, ‘A press for the planet. Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis’ reminds us as a media organisation that we still play a key role in highlighting the climate crisis that impacts us all and the importance of our role in providing the public access to reliable and verified information so they can make informed decisions.”
