A Japanese student involved in an NGO dedicated to clearing litter at major events in Lautoka City has chosen not to press charges against the parents who claimed he allegedly abducted their children last weekend.

The 16-year-old student was wrongly accused by the parents who also assaulted the foreigner.

In a statement, Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu said on the day in question, the volunteer’s group had conducted a clean-up campaign from Shirley Park to the children’s park.

“The 16-year-old said he went to Churchill Park wanting to watch rugby, following which he picked up rubbish in the area,” said ASP Driu.

“After he finished, he went back to the children’s park to meet his peers.

“In his interview, he claimed the children followed him. After their group debrief, he walked them back to Churchill Park where he was met by a group of angry parents and was allegedly assaulted during the confrontation.”

ACP Driu said the 16-year-old declined to lodge a police report on the assault.

“We wish to clarify that the claim of the alleged kidnapping attempt is not true.”
