GOVERNMENT stated it recognised the unique challenges faced by Fiji’s indigenous community in starting and growing businesses and has assured its commitment to address them through targeted support mechanisms.

And top on its list is the creation of a conducive environment for indigenous businesses to thrive.

Speaking at the celebratory event for Nadonumai Holdings Ltd (NLH) in Suva last weekend, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo said this included implementing policies that promoted access to capital, technical assistance, and market opportunities for indigenous entrepreneurs.

Mr Vosarogo said the Government believed in fostering partnerships between indigenous businesses and government agencies, private sector organisations, and international stakeholders.

By leveraging these partnerships, he said indigenous entrepreneurs can access resources, expertise and networks essential for their success in an increasingly competitive global economy.

He added Government also promoted entrepreneurship education and training initiatives within indigenous communities.

“We believe by equipping indigenous youth with the knowledge, skills and mind-set needed to succeed in business, we can unleash a new generation of indigenous entrepreneurs who will drive economic growth and prosperity for years to come,” Mr Vosarogo said.

“We are committed to ensuring indigenous businesses have equal access to government procurement opportunities.

“This includes implementing policies that prioritise the procurement of goods and services from indigenous-owned businesses, thereby creating a level playing field and stimulating economic development within indigenous communities.”

Mr Vosarogo said they also recognised the importance of cultural preservation and respect for indigenous traditions in the business environment.

“We believe by fostering a supportive business environment, promoting entrepreneurship education, and fostering partnerships, we can create opportunities for indigenous businesses to thrive and succeed in the local, regional and international markets.”
