“It feels like a dream.”
These are the words of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School athletics head coach Waliki Satakala after the school won the girls division at the Fiji Finals yesterday.
MGM won bagged 14 gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals to etch their names in the game’s history books.
Suva Grammar School claimed second place while favourites Adi Cakobau School finished third.
Satakala said everything that was accomplished at the three-day tournament was borne from the hard work of the athletes.
“We had made a commitment to take the girls division since last year’s competition. Ever since then we have been working and preparing non-stop, trying to get a step closer to our goal,” Satakala said.
He said the unwavering support the team received from the school had been the backbone of their performance.
“The support from the school and the Gujarati committee has just been amazing. Taking care of all the athletes’ needs since we started training last year; this achievement wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for their support.”
He said making history at the HFC Bank Stadium would be something the athletes, fans and supporters of MGM would remember in the years to come.
“This is just the beginning, and next year, we will be coming for the boys division as well.”
He also thanked all their supporters who filled the stands at the stadium, who’s cheers and roars from motivated the athletes to do their best.
“We have such a strong base, and seeing all of them out here in the last three days has been very encouraging for the athletes, we dedicate this win to you.”
