SUGARCANE farmers must diversify into other cash crops as the industry faces uncertainty.

Ba, farmer Jasveer Lal made the comment yesterday urging farmers to invest in vegetable farming.

“If there is no support for the sugarcane farmers, they will be diverting to other cash crops and vegetable farming,” he said.

“For myself I’m not depending on sugarcane only.

“I bought this ten-acre sugarcane farm last year, and with the Rarawai Mill that got burnt last year I have learnt my lesson.”

Mr Lal said he has started planting duruka, bananas, dalo and investing in livestock farming.

“I am urging farmers to depend on cash crops for this fuel crisis, so you can still survive. If you have idle land invest in planting other cash crops — not only sugarcane.”
