The launch of 10 indigenous story books on Wednesday last week is expected to help boost the study and teaching of indigenous languages.
Speaking during the launch of the books, chief executive officer of the Institute of Indigenous Studies Fiji, Emitai Boladuadua, said the launch of the books would promote and advance indigenous research approaches into iTaukei and Rotuman cultural knowledge, epistemologies, world views and heritages and support the recording and documentation of stories and cultural practices and the restoration and conservation of cultural forms and expressions.
“There is a general lack of reading material, written in the iTaukei language, that is needed to be used for the teaching of Vosa Vakaviti in both primary and secondary schools,” Mr Boladuadua said.
“With this in mind, the Institute of Indigenous Studies Fiji (IISF), made up in the main of retired iTaukei, the teachers took it upon themselves to use their expertise and knowledge to write reading material, in this instance, specifically for the Year 1 to 3 students.”
The books are well illustrated by local artist Anare Somumu and authored by the late Ratu Semi Seruvakula, Vika Maloni, Tuipulotu Vugakoto, Mosese Uluicicia, Alitia Sila Temo, Sainimere Rauqeuqe and Vika Nasome.
Meanwhile, iTaukei Trust Fund Board (TTFB) chief executive officer Aisake Taito said they were delighted to partner with the Institute of Indigenous Studies Fiji on this educational initiative.
“As these children’s’ books are targeted at young children, who during their formative years will learn and grasp the basics of the Fijian language and culture,” Mr Taito said.
The Institute of Indigenous Studies (under the banner of the Retired Fijian Teachers Association) in partnership with the iTaukei Trust Fund Board launched the 10 Fijian language story books.
