Immunity for accused

One of the five police officers accused of assaulting and extorting thousands of dollars from a Nasinu businessman will be receiving immunity from prosecution.

Prosecutor John Vaurasi informed the High Court in Suva of the State’s intention as the case moves forward.

Semiji Puamau, Elizabeth Sautu, Koroi Lakokilepanoni, Bernard Vukivuki, and Timoci Belo face counts of assault, theft, wrongful confinement, and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

The offences allegedly occurred between July 21 and 22, 2025, involving businessman Aman Ram and sums totalling $19,000.

Mr Vaurasi informed the court that the formal immunity offer would be finalised once the accused persons obtain legal representation. Mr Puamau and Ms Sautu are without lawyers.

In the meantime, bail has been extended for all fove men and the case adjourned to June 23.
