A TOTAL of 53 confirmed HIV cases were recorded at the Labasa Divisional Hospital medical laboratory between January to August this year.
Labasa Divisional Hospital medical laboratory scientist and Miss Friendly North 2026 Isabella Raidriwa said there had been a significant increase in HIV infections in communities.
“There has been a great increase in HIV infections in our communities. This is alongside the destructive impact of illicit drugs such as methamphetamine, which is also known as ice,” she said.
Ms Raidriwa said 60 per cent of people living with HIV were young people.
She urged young people to speak openly about sexual health and help break the stigma surrounding HIV.
“I would like to encourage our youth to break the stigma and silence on sexual health.”
She said the rise in HIV infections was a concern and highlighted the need for greater awareness among young people.
“Young people should be encouraged to seek accurate information about sexual health and understand the importance of making informed decisions.”
