The Ministry of Health and Medical Services will proceed with the appointment of new doctors following an exemption from the Government’s public service hiring freeze.
In a statement, the ministry said it had acknowledged concerns raised by medical interns regarding delays in their appointments as medical officers.
According to the ministry, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka had granted an exemption from Ministry of Civil Service circular, which had imposed a freeze on new appointments across the public service as part of measures linked to the global fuel crisis.
With the exemption in place, the Health Ministry stated it would move ahead with the recruitment and selection for doctors who had completed their internship and obtained general registration with the Fiji Medical Council.
“All appointments will be made in accordance with the relevant recruitment and selection procedures.”
It stated the process was expected to be completed by August, 2026.
