THE stage is set for another blockbuster battle as the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua return to the capital to host the NSW Waratahs in Round 14 of the Super Rugby Pacific this Saturday at HFC Bank Stadium.
Despite emotions running high during the season, Drua head coach Glen Jackson said the side remained fully motivated as they prepare for their only match in Suva this year.
Jackson said the players were excited to return to the capital, especially with many squad members having strong ties to the region.
“We’re excited to get to Suva for the one and only game up there.
“And boys, as you know, most of them are from up those ways. So, it’s exciting to get over there,” Jackson said.
The Drua head into the clash refreshed after a bye week and ready for another physical encounter against a Waratahs side stacked with experience and international talent.
Jackson highlighted the breakdown battle as a key area once again, saying it remains central to the way the Drua want to play.
“You know, we look after our ball, we get our exciting backs freedom out there. So, our forwards have got to put up their hand,” he said.
The side, however, has been dealt a major setback with experienced prop Haereiti Hetet ruled out for the remainder of the season through injury.
Jackson admitted the loss was massive for the squad, especially with Hetet nearing his 50th appearance milestone for the club.
But the Drua coach believes veteran prop Peni Ravai is more than capable of stepping into the role.
“Peni has been playing unbelievable for us this year.
“With his experience of playing in Australia and test matches, that just gave him the nod.”
Jackson also acknowledged the dangerous threat posed by the Waratahs, particularly their star-studded backline which he described as “essentially a Wallabies team”.
The Drua and Waratahs know each other well, having built a fierce rivalry over recent seasons, with home advantage proving crucial in recent meetings.
The Suva crowd is expected to play a huge role again as the Drua look to defend home turf and keep their season alive in front of their passionate fans.
