There is a call for Government to urgently provide a fuel rebate for lorry drivers and harvest mechanical operators as rising fuel prices continue to push up harvesting and transport costs.
Seasonal politician Surendra Lal said fuel prices have more than doubled in over the past five months, placing pressure on cane harvesting operations across the country.
“Fuel prices have increased by $2.23 to $4.58, an increase of about $2.35, or more than 100 per cent.”
Mr Lal said the rise had affected harvesting costs, delivery charges and wages for cane cutters, many of whom are also facing higher living costs.
He urged the Government to act quickly as delays could affect the current harvesting season.
The crushing season is expected to commence on June 17.
