Government has approved an eight-month extension of Fiji’s Beche-de-mer (BDM) harvesting season, allowing fishers to continue harvesting the lucrative marine resource until 31 January 2027.

In a statement, the Ministry of Fisheries confirmed that the harvesting period, which was originally due to end this month, will now run from 1 June 2026 to 31 January 2027 following an assessment of the socio-economic benefits generated since the fishery reopened in February.

The Ministry said the extension was aimed at supporting coastal and maritime communities that depend heavily on the fishery for income.

Revenue earned from Beche-de-mer harvesting helps families meet daily household expenses, food security needs, children’s education costs and transportation expenses, particularly in remote maritime areas where alternative sources of income are limited.

The Government also acknowledged the challenges faced by fishers due to rising fuel costs and logistical difficulties, noting that the fishery has provided critical financial relief while supporting employment opportunities for divers, fishers, processors, boat operators and transport providers.

“By extending the BDM fishery, the Government aims to cushion the economic impact on coastal communities during this closure, offering a sustainable pivot for local livelihoods.”

While extending the harvesting period, the Ministry stressed that sustainability remains a priority.

It said strict monitoring, compliance measures and export controls will remain in place throughout the extended season to ensure harvesting levels do not compromise future stocks.

The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with customary fishing rights owners, licensed exporters, community leaders and enforcement agencies to ensure responsible management of the resource.

The Government thanked qoliqoli owners, coastal communities and industry stakeholders for their continued cooperation in managing Fiji’s marine resources.
