Minister for Health Doctor Atonio Lalabalavu described his presence at this morning’s Motibhai Group’s annual Bushells Morning Tea as one that reflected Government’s commitment in tackling cancer.
Speaking at the event that gathered about people from the public and private sectors, Dr Lalabalavu said it was also great to see increased support from the private sector
“It’s been nineteen years now and this is Bushells biggest morning tea,” he said.
“Upon receiving invitation I took it upon myself and the ministry to attend and be here in person.
Motibhai’s Marketing manager Abraham Gomes said this was the first time for them to have a Government Minister as chief guest.
“This is usually what we do at the start of the year and we get in touch with the Fiji Cancer Society to help us secure a guest and we’re happy to have the Minister for Health.”
“In the past we used to have a launching event and host a morning tea party to raise funds at a different date but since last year we have decided to do both the events together,”
“Looking at the alarming statistics on deaths caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs), fundraising events such as the Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea campaign which is the longest running and biggest cancer fundraising initiative in the country is playing an important role in spreading cancer awareness, advocacy and patient support.
“While NCDs are responsible for eighty percent of the deaths in the country, cancer is the third largest killer,” Mr Gomes said.
