Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu says the courage, sacrifice and resilience of the Girmitiyas helped shape modern Fiji and should continue to inspire unity among all Fijians.
In a Girmit Day message today, Mr Seruiratu paid tribute to the thousands of indentured labourers who arrived in Fiji between 1879 and 1916 under the Girmit system.
“Today, as we commemorate Girmit Day, we honour the courage, sacrifice and resilience of the Girmitiyas whose struggles and contributions helped shape the Fiji we know today,” he said.
Mr Seruiratu said the Girmitiyas endured separation from their families, harsh working conditions and uncertainty about their future, but through perseverance and determination, they helped build the foundations of the country.
“Their perseverance, determination and belief in a better future transformed adversity into opportunity and contributed greatly to the social, cultural and economic development of our beloved nation,” he said.
He said the story of the Girmitiyas was not only one of suffering, but also a powerful lesson in courage, endurance and hope.
“Their will to overcome obstacles reminds us that no challenge is too great when people remain united, hardworking and committed to building a better future,” Mr Seruiratu said.
The Opposition Leader said Fiji’s strength had always come from its people and called on citizens to continue embracing the values demonstrated by the Girmitiyas.
“Let us embrace the values of sacrifice, resilience, discipline and service to others, and let us continue to endure and work together for the benefit and progress of our nation,” he said.
Mr Seruiratu also urged Fijians to use Girmit Day as an opportunity to strengthen unity and mutual respect.
“Let us celebrate Girmit Day not as divided communities, but as one people, holding hands in solidarity and moving our country forward together as a united Fiji,” he said.
“May the legacy of the Girmitiyas continue to inspire us all.”
