THE Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has raised concerns that “consumption of alcohol” was used as a reason for the death of a man who tried to prevent a domestic dispute.

A statement from the centre said while alcohol was a factor in the death of 38-year-old Ovasisi Salusalu, there were many other similar reported cases where alcohol was not a factor, “but in fact, the patriarchal structures in the country that gave men so many privileges and a sense of entitlement”.

“For these two cases, where alcohol was a contributing factor, there were many other cases reported to us last week where alcohol was not a factor,” FWCC said.

“Alcohol consumption is also a contributing factor to violence against women and girls but not the cause and never an excuse.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu had said the incident was a reminder that the excessive consumption of alcohol could have serious consequences and members of the public needed to drink responsibly and in moderation.
