A night of music, fun and reminiscing, the Golden Dragon Diamond Jubilee Celebration will be staged on Saturday, May 17 at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel.
Local legends of music are gearing up for the event, excited for the long awaited reunion with their counterparts from overseas.
Music legend and Dragon Music Shop owner Ken Janson has confirmed the participation of Fiji music greats such as Victor Rounds, Henry Foon, Tom Mawi, Kuki Nayacakalou, Jimi Nathu, Eni Kumar, Sam & Annie Mawi, Cathy N Rice, Wise Baledrokadroka, Mike Reymond, Ditui Abariga, Izzy Vulaca, Ben Masirewa, Joe Heritage and Nez Hazelman.
Sixty years of wonderful memories has also brought together these performers on social media to write about how they were once aspiring musicians, performing in the Golden Dragoon Nightclub in the ’60s.
Bass guitarist Victor Rounds, who has jammed with famous singers such as Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and Glenn Frey, said the establishment was one of a kind, with Janson leading many bands.
“The establishment was an institution to all of Fiji’s musicians who have since passed on or have immigrated to other continents to pursue their musical careers,” Rounds wrote.
“The man behind the legacy of that famous club is none other than Ken Janson.
“It’s been an honour and a privilege to be part of the celebratory house band for this special occasion.”
Janson told this neswpaper he was excited about the reunion and was looking forward to meeting old friends he’s played with.
“This is a night of celebration, a night to salute the good musicians we have lost and a night to celebrate those who are still with us,” Janson said.
“I am very lucky to have met and performed with many famous musicians during my lifetime here in Fiji.”
