TWO changes were made to the Fiji Rugby Union constitution including four-year terms for board members following a special general meeting yesterday in Suva.
The changes include he quorum and the term of the board.
The chief executive officer Radrodro Tabualevu said the members were happy with the changes.
“The FRU board is pleased to confirm that the unions today attended in numbers and voted in the two changes to the constitution that it ( board) proposed to the council,” he said.
“The proposed changes have been minimal and designed to improve the function of the council until a more comprehensive constitutional review is completed.
“The makeup of the membership, trusteeship and council has been retained and the mode of voting.
“Change to the quorum to ensures general meetings keep a democratic number, although elevating the major unions, to avoid dysfunction by unions by not attending council meetings.”
Tabualevu said the change in the term of the board would allow stability for the union.
“In keeping with World Rugby proposition the board’s new terms is for four years.
“This is to facilitate the execution of long-term planning and stability for the Union and for the executive management team,” he added.
“A more comprehensive change is warranted to bring in staggered membership, rotational membership and maximum terms.
“The council agreed to a proposal from the floor for an invitation to be extended to World Rugby to independently review the whole constitution to ensure that it complies with World best practice and is fit for purpose.”
Meanwhile, the unions have been asked to send their proposal to the FRU for the change in the format of the provincial cup competition known as the Skipper Cup.
