THE Fiji Rugby Union has taken a significant step towards expanding its global footprint after its board approved the proposed Fijian Latui brand aimed at breaking into the European rugby market.
The initiative, still subject to legal and structural finalisation, is expected to create a new high-performance pathway for local players while elevating Fiji’s presence in world rugby.
FRU chief executive officer Koli Sewabu confirmed the concept is already in motion, with early plans focused on assembling a competitive squad drawn from the top domestic talent pool.
“We’re looking at the Latui or whatever brand that we will decide on, which will go into the European market,” Sewabu said.
The proposed side is expected to feature players on the fringe of overseas contracts — particularly those close to breaking into France’s Pro D2 and Top 14 competitions — providing them with a platform to showcase their abilities against European opposition.
Sewabu said the immediate goal was to organise exhibition matches abroad as a way of testing the concept and building interest among potential investors.
