WHAT began as a dream that seemed out of reach has quickly turned into an inspiring reality.

For 19-year-old rugby player Misi William Ottarberg, had never seriously played rugby but today, the former soccer player is making his mark with Lomaiviti Black Rugby Club and the Suva Under-20 side, proving that faith, determination and hard work can open unexpected doors.

Hailing from Nacokaika in Naitasiri with maternal links to Navunimono in Tailevu, Ottarberg’s rugby journey has been anything but conventional.

Growing up, his dream was to attend Ratu Kadavulevu School, where he hoped to develop into a rugby player. However, financial hardship meant that dream never materialised.

Instead, he attended Muaniweni College, where soccer became his sport.

Despite missing the traditional pathway that has produced many of Fiji’s rugby stars, Ottarberg never gave up on his ambition.

“I kept praying to God, asking Him that one day I would play for one of the rugby clubs in Fiji and develop my rugby career,” he said.

After completing high school, Ottarberg enrolled at Fiji National University’s Samabula campus to study Automotive Engineering.

It was there that his rugby story truly began.

Representing FNU at the Inter-Tertiary Games last year, Ottarberg discovered a natural talent for the game. Encouraged by his performances, he quietly attended the Suva Under-20 trials without telling his family.

He expected little from the opportunity.

Instead, he received a selection that would change his life.

“I was surprised when the coaches selected me that I had made it to the Suva Under-20 team. I believe this is God’s blessing and the first step towards achieving my dream of becoming a professional rugby player.”

Now playing for Lomaiviti Black Rugby Club, Ottarberg continues to adapt to the demands of rugby after years on the soccer field.

Playing at lock, he believes his football background has become one of his greatest strengths.

“The attacking skills and awareness I learned from soccer help me in rugby, especially when contesting for the ball and reading play.”

While still in the early stages of his rugby career, Ottarberg has already set his sights on an even bigger goal—to one day wear the white jersey and represent Fiji on the international stage.

He credits his teammates at Lomaiviti Black for helping him grow in confidence and develop his game, while also acknowledging the unwavering support of his family.
