The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has appealed to members of the public to be vigilant and report all instances of vandalism to police.
The appeal follows an incident where a drum roller belonging to one of its contractors was vandalised near Oniviro outside Levuka town last weekend.
The machinery belongs to contractor Lomanitoba Company Limited.
FRA chief executive officer Kamal Prasad said those acts of vandalism were unacceptable because “it is not only associated with costly repairs and slowing down the maintenance works, but it further encourages criminal activity”.
“The public needs to be mindful that the damage inflicted on the contractor’s equipment will only slow down road works in their area. This hugely impacts on the cost of sending the contractors to remote sites as some contractors are not willing to deploy on normal rates purely because of such threats,” Mr Prasad said.
He said the matter had been referred to police.
