Fiji Roads Authority personnel and contractors around the country are undertaking a reconnaissance of the damage sustained by the authority’s infrastructure from the torrential rain and flooding in the last three days.

FRA acting CEO Sonal Goundar said they were also monitoring flood water levels for planning and deployment of contractors for remediation works.

He said where practical, their teams worked round the clock to ensure roads were accessible for emergency and recovery services.

He added fit-for-purpose remedial works would commence as soon as the weather was favorable for construction.

“The initial damage assessments suggest that the damage to low-level crossings was caused by flood debris building up against structures and diverting the flood waters to the road approaches, which caused the structural damage and washout of approaches,” Mr Goundar said.

He said there was also widespread loss of gravel from the unsealed roads that had made roads unsafe to use in rainy weather.

“This will impact most of the bus routes and consequently, bus services will be affected in most places, especially around the interior routes of the Western and Northern divisions.”
