Former Wallabies halfback Brian Cox dies

Update: 11:38AM Former Wallabies halfback Brian Cox has died at the age of 86.

The Australian Rugby Union has offered its condolences to Cox’s family, hailing the former Manly player for his toughness and accurate pass.

The ARU said Cox, who was Wallaby No.338, died at the weekend.

“Playing nine tests for Australia, Brian did his country proud every time he wore the Wallaby Jersey,” ARU CEO Bill Pulver said.

“Hailing from a proud rugby family, Brian’s two sons followed in their father’s footsteps and had the honour of playing for the Wallabies.”

Cox played 14 matches for New South Wales and 142 first grade games for the Marlins before stepping into post-retirement administrative roles with the club, who honoured him with a life membership.

He was also voluntary timekeeper for Manly, NSW Waratahs home matches and Sydney-based tests between 1989 and 2006.

He is survived by sons Phillip and Mitchell, who earned 27 Wallabies test caps between them, and wife Judy.
