The Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) has published a new report that states Fiji’s police briefed former Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama and his police commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho on a Fiji businessperson having suspected criminal ties.

The OCCRP is one of the largest investigative journalism organizations in the world.

“The five-page 2020 Fiji police briefing obtained by OCCRP portrays (the businessperson) at the head of what officers suspected was a local organized crime group comprised of members of the country’s ethnic Chinese diaspora,” states the OCCRP in its report.

Key revelations in the report reveal, “three police sources told OCCRP that Mr Bainimarama and Mr Qiliho took no action after the briefings and continued a warm public relationship with businessperson.”

“Former Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, who was convicted earlier this year on unrelated charges, was presented with the briefing that year, three police officers with direct knowledge of events told OCCRP,” states the OCCRP report.

“Two of these sources said that Bainimarama’s police chief, Sitiveni Qiliho, was also briefed.”

This is an edited version of the full report published by OCCRP.
