NATUREFIJI- MareqetiViti held a foreshore clean-up “for the birds” at Nasese in Suva yesterday.
The organisation expects the Pacific Golden Plover (Dilio), Bar-tailed Godwit (Batibalavu) and the Wandering Tattler (Doli) to be among the first migratory birds to show up in September.
This clean-up is a member-led activity, resulting from one of the pledges made at the organisation’s event on World Migratory Bird Day earlier in May.
According to AEWA – Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds – every year, World Migratory Bird Day presents an annual theme aiming to raise awareness of issues affecting migratory birds.
It also states that another objective of the day is to inspire people and organisations around the world to take measures for their conservation.
This year was themed ‘Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution!’ that put the spotlight on the negative impact of plastic pollution on migratory birds and their habitats.
