Update: 10:58AM SAINT Joseph’s Secondary School does not hold an inter house athletics competition to find its representatives to the annual Coca Cola Games but the Waimanu Road girls know to prepare ahead.
The head of department for physical education, Karalaini Seruiratu said their athletes have been preparing since the end of the last school year and are focused on improving the school�s standings.
At the 2017 Coca Cola Games, SJSS became a determining factor in how former champs Jasper Williams High School and new winners Adi Cakobau School fared at the end of three days of competition.
The Waimanu Road schools with former high school sprint queen Sisilia Seavula and current student Heleina Young pulling the reigns have steadily climbed up the ladder in the all out battle for athletics supremacy.
Ms Seruiratu said weekly time trials which began two Saturdays ago and continues has helped to streamline the athletes� performances.
“The training has been coming off season and we have been taking down the names of the best times in each event,” said Mrs Seruiratu.
“So us we are in third place so we will try and move up either on the first or second so it all depends on the preparations from last year and this year.”
A little known appreciated fact about the girls in blue is the access that the school has to specialist coaches who over the years have helped create athletes who take ownership of their individual training programmes.
So far SJSS have managed to secure coaches for the jumps, throws and sprints.
