The Fiji National University (FNU) believes that no child in Fiji should be deprived of having access to higher education services.

FNU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba highlighted this in a statement as the tertiary institution rounded off its first week of ‘Career Discovery for High School Students’ school tour last week.

Prof Nabobo-Baba said the tour is a perfect example of how FNU empowers young Fijians to reach and prepare for their dreams, even before they set foot into our campuses.

“We are utilising all our resources to take our services to students in the most remote and rural areas of Fiji because we understand that for most students, their location and financial situation is often a drawback in accessing academic services from universities,” Prof Nabobo-Baba said.

“High schools in Rewa, Tailevu and Naitasiri and as far as Wainimala Secondary School were part of the tour in the Central Division last week. This week, the teams are covering the remaining schools in the division before heading out to the Western and Northern Divisions.

“We are aiming to reach every child – even those in our maritime areas – which is why we are going to have virtual sessions in the first week of August.”

John Wesley College vice principal Ravindra Kumar Sharma said he was grateful that the team visited the students to provide academic and career advice.

“Most of our students choose to go to FNU rather than any other tertiary education for their higher education.”

John Wesley College principal Mereani Lutunaika echoed similar sentiments saying they were happy the team from FNU came to talk to the students about the programs they offered, particularly for their students who [still had questions about their career path.

Ms Lutunaika commended the team for their effort in helping students find a pathway to higher education.

The high school visits continue this week until the first week of August.
