FIJI Rugby Union chairman John Sanday has issued a bold challenge ahead of the Nations Championship in the United Kingdom this weekend, declaring that the Flying Fijians are ready to prove that a small island nation can compete with the best teams in the world.
Speaking to Times Sport, Sanday said the target was clear which is to win at least two of the three pool matches, while believing a clean sweep was within reach if the team delivered on game day.
“We want to win two out of three, and if we can get three out of three, we’ll take that. Everything has been done and all the preparation has been completed at the highest level imaginable. Now it is about delivery on game day and on the field.”
Sanday said months of planning and preparation had been carried out to ensure the national side was fully equipped for the campaign.
“The coaching team is in place, the squad has been selected, and all the hard work has been done. We are now looking forward to seeing everything come together,” he said.
The chairman also addressed Fiji’s role as host of the Nations Championship, describing it as a significant milestone for the union.
“As a board, we have given our time, our hard work and our expertise to organise this tournament. It is the first time we are doing this, and all the work on the ground is being handled by us.”
He reassured supporters that the union was committed to delivering a world-class event.
“I can tell everyone that we are going to deliver a great experience on the day. We want Fiji to be proud of what we produce, both on and off the field.”
“We are going to show the world that even though we are a small dot in the South Pacific Ocean, we can beat the best in the world.”
Sanday believes the Flying Fijians have the talent and preparation to make a major statement in the Nations Championship.
The Flying Fijians will look to make a strong statement against Wales as they begin their Nations Championship campaign at 1.10am this Sunday in Cardiff.
