A coordinated maritime search and rescue operation has successfully located and rescued five people, including a child, after their boat became overdue between Korolevu and Vatulele.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre JRCC Fiji, based at the Vuvale Maritime Essential Services Centre, activated the response last night after concerns were raised that the vessel had not reached its destination in rough sea conditions.

The Republic of Fiji Navy deployed RFNS SAVENACA in the early hours of the morning to lead the search effort. The operation was significantly strengthened through aerial support provided by the New Zealand Defence Force P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, along with two domestic aircraft carrying Navy search-and-rescue air riders.

The overdue boat was located this morning in challenging sea conditions, and all five occupants were safely rescued. Authorities confirmed that the group, which included a child, is now being assisted as efforts continue to return them safely to shore.

The NZDF P-8 aircraft was also engaged in parallel support for another search and rescue operation in Kiribati, coordinated through JRCC Fiji, highlighting the regional scope of maritime assistance efforts.

The Republic of Fiji Navy has acknowledged all agencies involved in the successful operation, noting that the outcome reflects strong coordination between Fiji and regional partners in responding to maritime emergencies.

Officials have again urged mariners, particularly small boat operators, to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions and to prioritise safety at sea at all times.
