While many athletes would have everything they need during the Coca-Cola Games, there are just as many who don’t have the same privileges.
For many athletes coming from the maritime and rural schools, being able to be at the Coke Games is a blessing but winning a medal is a true testament of their determination.
One of those athletes is Eminoni Raqiawa of Niusawa Methodist High School in Taveuni.
Raqiawa won a gold medal for his school in the sub-junior javelin event, throwing a distance of 43.64m.
The Nakasaleka, Kadavu athlete could only thank his dad and mum and extended family for coming together to financially support him on his journey to the Fiji Finals.
“My mum and dad are unemployed, so they always try to meet my needs especially when I have to participate in an important school event like this,” he said.
“I’m fortunate to have aunties and uncles that help me, especially with preparations for camp and transportation.
“I’m truly grateful to all of them that have come together to support me and with their help I’ve been able to win a gold medal at the Coke Games.”
He said he was one of the eight athletes that qualified from the school to go to athletics meet.
For the first time, he has come to the HFC Bank Stadium to represent his school in javelin.
“When I got up to throw, I was so scared,” he said.
“I’m not used to the atmosphere, especially seeing the many people on the side of the field cheering for their teams.
“I was scared since it’s the first time for me to participate in a national event in Suva.”
As he continued to throw, he finally overcame his fear and won gold for Niusawa.
He looks forward to heading back home with his gold to show his parents and family.
In the same event, Qenika Draunimasi of Suva Grammar School won silver with a throw of 41.34m and Apisai Suguturaga of Dreketi Central College won bronze with a throw of 39.38m.
