LABASA College is heading into this year’s Coca-Cola Games with hopes to secure the school’s first medal at the national meet.

Assistant coach Aminisitai Rokotuva said the school brought 18 athletes to Suva, 16 boys and two girls which was a major increase from five athletes last year.

“This is a big turnout for us and a big achievement for the school. All these athletes qualified, and we want to give them the exposure to compete at this level,” Rokotuva said.

The team earned its place at the Fiji Finals following a strong show during their zone competition at Dreketi College, where they claimed the boys’ division title and finished third in the girls’ division.

Despite the progress, preparation has not come easy. Rokotuva highlighted the challenge of balancing academic responsibilities with training, with athletes and coaches often limited to just an hour of afternoon sessions.

“We had to sacrifice and manage our workload while preparing the athletes, but the commitment has been there — we’ve been training in the mornings and afternoons,” he said.

Rokotuva said exposure was a key part of their mission, but the team was also determined to return home with success.

“In previous years, we haven’t won any medals at the Coca-Cola Games,” he said.

“This year, our goal is simple — at least one medal. That would be a huge achievement for us.”

Labasa College boys athletes will compete across a range of events, including shot put, javelin, long jump, triple jump, sprints, the 400 metres, and the 4x100m relay.

The two girls athletes will both feature in the Javelin. Rokotuva acknowledged the strong backing from the school, with financial and moral support enabling the team to travel to Suva.

“We thank the school administration, teachers, and supporters,” he said

With excitement building among the squad, the focus has been on preparing them mentally and physically for the big stage.

“We keep reminding them that we are not just here to participate — we are here to achieve something,” Rokotuva said.

He also called on Labasa College alumni and supporters in Suva to come out in numbers and cheer on the team during the three-day competition.
