EIGHT residential structures were destroyed or severely damaged in five fires across Fiji over two days, leaving families homeless and prompting the National Fire Authority (NFA) to warn the public against complacency over fire safety.
The fires occurred in Wairuku, Rakiraki, Namara and Dreketilailai in Labasa, Nawaicoba in Nadi, and Natolevu in Tavua on October 9 and 10.
In a statement, NFA chief executive officer Puamau Sowane said four buildings were completely destroyed, while others sustained extensive damage.
At least five family members were left homeless after their Rakiraki home sustained 70 per cent structural damage.
The homeowner’s mother suffered minor injuries to her hands while caring for her grandchildren. In Labasa, a five-bedroom house occupied by six people was completely destroyed. No injuries or fatalities were reported in that incident.
Mr Sowane said several properties were uninsured, leaving owners facing potential financial hardship.
The causes of the five fires have not been confirmed and remain under investigation.
Mr Sowane said the incidents highlighted how quickly fires could destroy homes and displace families.
“Five structural fires in just two days is deeply concerning,” he said.
“These incidents demonstrate how quickly a fire can destroy a home, displace families and result in substantial financial losses.”
He urged households to check electrical installations, practise safe cooking and secure vacant properties against potential fire hazards.
“We cannot afford to be complacent about fire safety.”
He also stressed the importance of reporting fires immediately and moving to safety.
