The National Fire Authority has reiterated its call for homeowners to take fire safety precautions seriously.
This after two homes were completely destroyed by fire leaving 12 people homeless.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane expressed deep concern over the rising number of structural fires.
“To date, Fiji has already recorded 10 fire related deaths this year alone,” Mr Sowane said in a statement.
“This is a deeply concerning statistic and a stark reminder that fire safety must be taken seriously in every household.
“We are urging members of the public to remain vigilant and proactive when it comes to fire safety. Many fires can be prevented through simple precautions and awareness.”
Mr Sowane said the recent incident in Sabeto was heartbreaking.
“Especially knowing that 12 people have now been displaced and have lost their homes and belongings.
“Fires not only destroy properties, but they also leave emotional and psychological impacts on families who are forced to rebuild their lives from nothing.”
According to the authority, the fire that occurred on Saturday destroyed the homes belonged to 58-year-old farmer Kinijioji Vuda and Rosie Tours employee Vereimi Tidrasi.
Investigations into the two house fires continue.
