Fiji’s M-PAiSA Crowned ‘PayTech of the Year’ at the 2026 Asia FinTech AwardsA Landmark Win for the Pacific
When Digital Financial Services (DFS) M-PAiSA was announced as the winner of the PayTech of the Year Award at the prestigious 2026 Asia FinTech Awards, it marked more than just a corporate milestone. Standing tall alongside—and ahead of—some of Asia’s largest and most established financial technology giants, Fiji’s homegrown platform proved that true industry disruption is measured by real-world impact, not geographical or market size, said Mr Shailendra Prasad General for Digital Financial Service Pte Limited (M-PAiSA)
It was a proud moment for the M-PAiSA Team.
The recognition achieved in its first year operating as a separate legal entity, cements M-PAiSA’s status as a pioneer in financial inclusion, accessibility, and digital economic transformation across the South Pacific. For the last 16 years, M-PAiSA has become an integral part everyday financial needs of Fijians. The assessment for the award by an independent panel of industry experts from different countries gives further credence to the award.
Redefining Scale Through Real-World Impact
For a platform originating from a small Pacific Island nation, competing on a regional Asian stage could have seemed daunting. However, M-PAiSA’s leadership emphasized that the victory was never about out-scaling massive multinational tech players. It was about the significant beneficial impact it has on individuals, households, and businesses on relative basis. M-PAiSA proved that world-class digital financial solutions can be engineered locally to solve our own unique everyday consumer struggles. The award sends a strong signal to the global community that Fiji and the broader Pacific are not merely consumers of foreign financial technologies, but active creators of innovative, purpose-driven solutions.
Bridging the formal economy
Across the Pacific, rural farmers, women entrepreneurs, and remote island communities have long faced exclusion from traditional banking. M-PAiSA serves as a vital financial lifeline, bringing these underserved segments securely into the formal economy. In a small, geographically dispersed population lacking economies of scale, bricks and mortar type operations is simply not sustainable. Building a digital financial service and payments ecosystem is the only answer to take services more cost effectively to the people. Over
580,000 Fijians are registered for M-PAiSA services.
A 16-Year Journey: Into Uncharted Territory
Today, mobile wallets are an integrated part of Fijian daily life. However, looking back 16 years ago when the journey began, the concept of storing money on a mobile phone was entirely foreign. At the time, around 45% of Fiji’s bankable population was either unbanked or under banked. Today, this has fallen around 7% .
With no established models to reference—even in more developed neighbors like Australia and New Zealand—venturing into mobile money required immense courage and strategic foresight:
•De-Risking with the UNCDF: Early grant funding and partnership from the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) played an instrumental role in de-risking the initiative during its uncertain formative years.
•Visionary Corporate Backing: Vodafone Fiji’s leadership took a bold, calculated risk by heavily investing in an unproven local concept.
•Regulatory Partnership: The Reserve Bank of Fiji showed tremendous confidence by granting conditional approval when mobile money regulations were still in their infancy, proving the power of public-private synergy.
From Basic Mobile Money to a Robust Digital Ecosystem
What began as a modest mobile money transfer service has evolved into an advanced, comprehensive digital payment ecosystem. M-PAiSA’s modern infrastructure features:
•Global Integration: Direct integration with global Schemes Card payment network through Mastercard, allowing for international reach.
•Everyday Convenience: Tap-and-pay NFC capabilities and widespread QR merchant acceptance.
•Comprehensive Services: Seamless wallet-to-wallet transfers, bank transfers, Government-to-Person (G2P), and Person-to-Government (P2G) payments and online payment gateway services.
•Remittance Lifelines: Providing crucial last-mile connectivity for international remittances that support household incomes, education, and healthcare.
Looking Ahead: The Next Generation of Fintech
Standing still is not an option in an industry transforming at an unprecedented pace. To stay ahead, M-PAiSA is actively aligning its roadmap with next-generation technologies. As we celebrate this achievement, we recognise that this award is not the destination. There are still communities to serve, barriers to remove and opportunities to create.
“We remain committed to building solutions that empower people, strengthen businesses. Our ultimate vision is simple: to use digital innovation to bring financial opportunity closer to every Fijian, wherever they are, and help create a more inclusive and connected digital economy”, said Mr Prasad
As the M-PAiSA platform looks to the future, key focus areas include more AI-driven financial services, Agentic AI, digital identity and eKYC integration, real-time cross-border payments, stablecoins, and evolutions such as Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Backed by ongoing investments in cybersecurity and local tech talent development, M-PAiSA is poised to shape—not just participate in—the digital economy of tomorrow.
