Fijian receives UN award

FIJI-BORN Nauludole Mataitini was recently awarded the United Nations secretary-general’s award in the collegiality category in New York.

UN under-secretary-general Peter Drennan said the award was given to honour an individual staff member for creating a positive and productive work environment in the organisation.

“It is with great pleasure that I ask you to join me in congratulating our colleague Nauludole Mataitini, fondly known as Matt, who is currently chief security adviser in Darfur, Sudan,” Mr Drennan said.

“Matt was nominated, without his knowledge, by his team and I am well aware that such popularity and unanimity are rare and demonstrate Matt’s management and leadership skills.

“Matt has been serving the organisation for many years and has been a role model to all he meets and works with.”

Mr Drennan said the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) was fortunate to have Mr Mataitini, who was a role model that made the staff members feel valued.

The collegiality category is part of the four awards given out annually by the UN to recognise the work of UN staff.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, who hosted the awards last week, said the examples set by award winners were meant to inspire colleagues to replicate good practices and invigorate the way the organisation delivered its programs and services.
