The Fijian Cup touch rugby competition will tap off today at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, bringing together 32 teams for a highly anticipated event that celebrates Fijian talent and international sportsmanship.
The tournament, which began in 2016, continues to grow, thanks to support from the Government of Fiji, the Fiji National Sports Commission, and Tourism HQ.
“We are forever grateful to the sponsors for providing such a platform that allows the exposure of our touch talent against some of the best touch talent in the world,” said Tevita Mau, President of Touch Federation Fiji.
The Fijian Cup isn’t just about the game, according to Mau, it also supports sports tourism and economic growth for Fiji.
“It is providing a platform of touch experience for our local talent and, at the same time, is part of the overall strategy of government in promoting sports tourism, whereby the Fiji economy gets to benefit from our visitors who come to participate and enjoy our island settings,” he added.
This year’s event includes 32 teams, eight of them local, competing across four divisions: men’s open, women’s open, mixed open, and senior mixed masters.
With cash prizes on offer, teams are expected to bring their best to the field.
“Expect to see top-level touch as all teams are gunning for the lucrative prizes that are on offer,” he said.
Mau extended his gratitude to all who made the tournament possible.
“Forever grateful to all the stakeholders that are making this event possible and wish all the participating teams the very best.”
The two-day tournament stands as a testament to Fiji’s passion for touch rugby, bringing together communities and showcasing the nation’s warm hospitality and scenic beauty.
