Fiji population nears one million

Fiji’s population has grown by more than 50,000 people since the 2017 Census, with the latest Fiji Bureau of Statistics Population Grid estimating the country’s population at 935,285.

The Bureau says the new Fiji Population Grid 2026 provides a far more detailed picture of where people live by mapping population distribution in 100-metre by 100-metre grid cells instead of relying solely on traditional administrative boundaries.

Between 2017 and 2026, Fiji’s projected population increased by 50,398 people, representing 5.7 percent growth, while the number of occupied grid cells declined slightly.

The report says the trend indicates more people are living in existing urban centres rather than spreading into new areas.

“The decline in low-density cells and growth in higher-density classes suggest increasing population concentration and urbanisation within existing locations.”

The Bureau says the high-resolution population grid is aligned with United Nations population projections and is designed to support planning, disaster management, infrastructure development and modern applications such as artificial intelligence.
