The Fiji Navy has begun hydrographic survey work in Malau, Vanua Levu, as part of efforts to strengthen the capabilities of a proposed Forward Operating Base in the Northern Division.

Naval officers and sailors from the Hydrographic Department have been deployed to conduct the work, which will provide accurate information on waterways and seabed conditions to support safe navigation and future maritime infrastructure development.

The deployment forms part of wider Republic of the Fiji Military Forces initiatives to enhance Forward Operating Base capabilities and a whole-of-government effort to improve maritime infrastructure, navigation safety and operational efficiency in Vanua Levu.

The hydrographic data will support safe vessel movement, maritime operations and the future development of ports and coastal infrastructure.

The work is also aligned with the National Development Plan’s objective of strengthening infrastructure and improving port services for government agencies, commercial operators and communities in the Northern Division.

The Fiji Navy says the deployment demonstrates its commitment to supporting national development, maritime safety and Fiji’s economic security.
