FIJI cannot always predict the challenges that may confront it but it could prepare itself to respond with greater coordination, says Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua.
While commending security agencies involved in the multi-agency program, Exercise Bougainville, Mr Tikoduadua said Fiji’s national security extended beyond its shores.
“On Tuesday, 25th August, I had the opportunity to return to witness the culmination of the exercise as it moved into its final Deployable Condition (DepCon), based on a simulated maritime incursion at Serenity Island,” he said.
“The exercise scenario involved a group taking control of the island and using it as a point for transportation of illicit drugs and weapons.
“This triggered our defence and policing forces to deploy and test their interoperability and response across governance, capacity and capability.”
He said exercises such as Bougainville allowed security agencies to train together, test the systems and capabilities, and strengthen the coordination that would be essential when responding to a real crisis.
“For me, seeing this exercise unfold was also a reminder that our national security responsibilities extend well beyond our shores.
“Fiji is an ocean state.
“Our maritime space connects our islands, supports our communities and economy, and is an important part of what we must be prepared to protect.
“Exercise Bougainville 2026 is ultimately an investment in our people and in our preparedness.”
