Fiji has improved its standing in the 2026 Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index, climbing to 24th place out of 180 countries.

The latest report, released last night, shows a significant jump from 40th position in 2025, reflecting stronger overall media conditions in the country.

Fiji’s overall score also improved to 76.76, up from 71.20 last year, indicating progress across several key indicators assessed by RSF.

Gains were recorded in political and economic indicators, with Fiji scoring 71.38 and 63.74 respectively in 2026. The country also maintained a strong performance in the security indicator, with a high score of 95.10.

However, the report noted some declines in rankings within specific categories, including legal and social indicators, highlighting areas that may require continued attention.

The World Press Freedom Index measures the level of freedom available to journalists based on political, economic, legal, social and safety conditions.

Despite some mixed results across categories, Fiji’s improved ranking signals positive momentum in the overall media environment.
