Dental surgeons were reminded of the challenges they face in the primary health care system at the Fiji Oral Health Association annual conference at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island on Friday.
While opening the conference, Dr Osea Dukuno, head of the school of Oral Health at Fiji National University said dentistry was a highly challenging profession.
“These encompass accessibility and affordability of dental care, lack of oral health awareness and the multidisciplinary approach to health care,” Dr Dukuno said.
“Addressing these challenges call for a concerted effort from each one of us.”
Dr Dukuno stressed the need for a concerted effort from all stakeholders.
“By forming strong alliances with community health centers, governmental and non-governmental organisations, we can contribute to the development of comprehensive health programs.
“These programs should encompass oral health education, prevention, and treatment, thereby promoting a culture of proactive health management.
“Your engagement in continuous professional development sharing knowledge and best practices and participating in public health initiatives is pivotal steps towards realising the vision of sustainable dentistry.”
